I like a good song. I like a good town. I LOVE Slovenia.

This time, we found ourselves in Škofja Loka. It’s famous for being old. The kind of old that involves cobblestones, medieval buildings, a monastery that preserves one of the oldest Slovenian sacred texts (more on that in another postcard) and, naturally, a castle perched on a hill keeping an eye on things. There are also a lot of churches. (I really don’t understand why such a small town needs so many churches.)

Škofja Loka is usually treated as a day trip, somewhere people visit from Ljubljana or Lake Bled. But we did things differently. We stayed for several nights and took day trips from there. It turned out to be a lovely place to linger. It’s quaint. The old streets are made for wandering. They were doing some construction while we were there to get ready for something big (more on that in that other postcard). And tucked into the basement of one of those beautiful old buildings is a truly excellent pizza place. An unexpected but very important discovery.

Everyone had their reasons for loving it. Mom said it felt like walking through a storybook. The boys enjoyed exploring the old streets and castle walls. Dad appreciated the quiet. And me? I loved the pizza.
