When the nature center was closed, we had to find other stuff to do. One of my boys saw a pamphlet for a “Bunker Museum”. He said, “This is a GOOD IDEA!” So we went.

The bunkers were from World War II. They were there because the Austrian soldiers could look out at Italy and Yugoslavia and say “Hey! People are coming!” and tell everyone. The Austrian military kept the bunkers for a long time. Then when they didn’t want them anymore, a man (who had been the Army guy in charge) bought the land and made a museum.

We walked around inside the old bunkers. They were dark and cold and kind of smelly. And then came the best part. The TANK! For a special treat sometimes they do tank rides. My boys and Dad put on helmets and rode around the woods in a tank. It was loud. Mom and I were smart and stayed behind and watched.

I’ve learned a lot about World War II and lines and borders and stuff. I don’t get it all because I’m still a little pig, but I think it would have been really hard to live in a bunker and tanks are cool.
